What are the symptoms of lower back pain?

The American Association of Neurological Surgeons estimates that 75-85 percent of Americans will experience back pain at some point in their lives. The most obvious symptom of lower back pain is discomfort in your lower back, but the condition can cause a few other less obvious symptoms, including:

  • Shooting pains or stabbing sensations down your leg and foot
  • Difficulty flexing your back or a decreased range of motion
  • Trouble standing up straight without experiencing pain

Although the following symptoms are less common, back pain can also cause:

  • Fever
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • A throbbing sensation in your abdomen
  • Numbness or tingling in your leg(s)
  • Loss of control in your bladder or bowels
  • Intense, persistent pain that gets worse at night

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, schedule an appointment with Mustang Chiropractic immediately, as they could be indicative of a more serious underlying problem.

What causes lower back pain?

Lower back pain is not a disorder in and of itself, but rather a symptom of a wide range of possible medical issues. A combination of our modern diet, poor posture, and weak core strength contributes to many peoples’ lower back pain, which can stem from complications in your:

  • Muscles
  • Nerves
  • Ligaments
  • Spinal vertebrae
  • Nearby organs, like your kidneys

Lower back pain is also frequently caused by radiculopathy (or a pinched nerve), which occurs when the nerve roots in your spinal column are compressed by the surrounding tissues, a herniated disc, or a bone spur. The pressure on your nerve root causes uncomfortable muscle spasms and gripping muscle tension.

Lumbar subluxation, where the spine has shifted posteriorly, is also frequently the cause of soft tissue complications in your back and neck.

How do you treat lower back pain?

The experts at Mustang Chiropractic first take a digital X-ray of your back to more accurately diagnose the cause and location of your lower back pain. From there, they provide several services that can help you find relief from your pain, including:

  • Manual adjustments or chiropractic manipulations
  • Massage therapy
  • Passive motion
  • Relaxing electrical stimulation
  • Therapeutic exercise
